Heaven has been on my mind a lot lately.
There have been things in the news that are so overwhelmingly painful and disturbing, that we can’t fully wrap our minds around it. There is suffering poured out on hundreds, even thousands, of people at a time with no apparent rhyme or reason. There are stories of the painful consequences that people have to endure because of their own choices and actions. And there is horror that is intentionally inflicted on innocent people whose voices of protest are muffled and even silenced. It’s too much to comprehend.
There is much work to be done and the workers are always inadequate in strength and number. The needs are insurmountable by our comparatively small and weak human labour force. But I do not say that to discourage people from getting involved or to condone passivity. Instead, it is a rallying cry to step up whatever work you’re already doing. Are you giving financially to aid work, mission work, humanitarian efforts? Then give a bit more and ask others around you to give as well. Are you active in the political realm, decrying injustice and giving voice to the voiceless? Then shout louder, seek to broaden your audience, and repeat your message again and again. Are you on the front lines, feeding the hungry, protecting the oppressed and enslaved, healing the sick and injured? Then implore others to join you, and be a tireless cheerleader for your coworkers.
Now here’s my point. Heaven. Even as your feet are weary and raw from the ceaseless work, even as your hands are continually emptied of material gain, even as your voice grows hoarse from your relentless advocating, even as your heart is broken again and again and again, lift up your eyes to the imminent reality of heaven. For there, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” (Rev. 21:4) There will be no more tsunamis, hurricanes or collapsed mines. No more complaining kids, feuding in-laws, or broken marriages. No more cancer, AIDS or Alzheimer’s. No more corporate ladders, crooked politics, or celebrity scandals. No more drunk driving, pedophilia, or meth addictions. No more. NO MORE!
