The Answers to All of Your Questions

14 Dec

Okay, maybe not quite all of your questions. Just the most important one: what are the answers from the previous post‘s riddle?

The first picture is of Wayne Gretzky. You may have heard of him. He’s a rather famous hockey player. His jersey number was 99.

The next picture is of 99 bottles of beer on the wall. Like the much-loved children’s bus ride song. If any of you introduce this song to my 5-year-old who is currently obsessed with counting to 100 (several times a day…”Mom! I have a great idea! Let’s count to 100!!!”…over and over and over again), I will hurt you. I will hurt you bad. I’m looking at you, oh newest subscriber.

Then we have Agent 99 from the TV show Get Smart. That’s way before my time, but I vaguely remember watching reruns at some point in my childhood.

Albert Einstein was a tricky one. (A tricky riddle, that is. I don’t know if he himself was a tricky kind of guy. Let’s just assume he was.) Einsteinium is atomic number 99 on the periodic table of elements. (I’m all into science and stuff, you know. I even memorized all the primary colours.)

The next picture is the most obvious one. 99 Red Balloons. For you young’uns, it’s a song. It’s a classic. No really, people actually listened to this kind of stuff. Some of them even liked it!

The “99restaurants.com” caption may have helped with that picture. It’s a restaurant chain in New England. I’m sure it’s great. I mean, how can you go wrong with hot wings on a funny-shaped plate?

And then there’s my darling Abi with 13 candles on her angel food birthday cake. If you’re good at math, you can figure out the connection. If you’re not good at math, I’ll just tell you: she was born in ’99.

The extra clue was that one subscriber would mess up the theme – which my brother promptly did by subscribing, bringing my number of subscribers to 100. If you’re good at math, you can figure out the connection. If you’re not good at math, I’ll just tell you: before my brother subscribed, I had 99 subscribers. Still stumped? Oh dear. The answer to the riddle is 99, people! Sheesh!

Oh, and then there’s that last picture (that I tacked on later. Some of you may not have seen it. I’ll give you a moment to take both a peek and a guess. Give up? Okay, keep reading.) Ethiopia uses a different calendar. They are 7 years behind the rest of the world. So when we flew there in ’06 we essentially travelled back in time to ’99. It was fun celebrating another millenium! We didn’t bother stocking up on water and canned goods for this one.

Okay, enough silliness. My next post will be all deep and contemplative and Christmasy. (Is it “con-TEMP-la-tive” or “con-tem-PLAY-tive”? Hmmm…something to think about.)
